Your San Diego Photographer

Coming from a family full of artists, from oil painters to wood workers, I have been surrounded by art and artists my entire life. I suppose it was destined that I would eventually become an artist, although until just a few years ago I did not know what medium would inspire me. When I found photography, I knew I had found the vehicle by which I was meant to create memorable and unique art, and my desire to create great art is deeply embedded and central to all of my photographic work.

Growing up, I was lucky enough to live all over the world, including Montana, Europe, and the Middle East. My exposure to a wide variety of artistic styles from across the globe kindled in me a strong appreciation for artists and their works, as well as a keen desire to join them in creating something unique and enduring. The places that I have lived and visited, full of art and artifacts historic, grand, and breathtaking, forced the artist in me into consciousness, and have had a tremendous influence on my personal and professional development as an artist.

I started my journey into photography as a hobby after my second child was born. I wanted to document everything: his first gummy smile, his first wobbly steps, and everything in between and after. I poured myself into documenting the special moments in my son's life wholeheartedly. In the process I started to learn not only the technical details that make a competent photographer, but also how to record my son's milestones in unique ways that showed a new angle on moments that are too often captured by parents in only blurry snapshots or their hazy memories.

After seeing my pictures of my son, it wasn't long before friends started asking me to take pictures of their own children. All of the requests brought me to the realization that I had discovered in myself the ability to help others document those special memories I had been capturing for my own family, and that this ability was coupled with a passion for doing just that. I started out simply doing some shoots for friends and family, but as I began getting requests from people I did not know who had seen the work that I had done, I decided that I would make full time career of photography.

I have a different style of photography than most people are used to. If one were to look at the results of a typical commercial photography session next to mine the differences would be stark and apparent. I try to find new ways to look at familiar moments, and capture them in a way nobody has done before. The GREAT, David Bailey said it best:

It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter, because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the extraordinary.

It is because of this that you won't see the traditional say cheese portraits from me. I strive to capture the true personality of my subjects. I want them look at the pictures I took for them many years from now and say - Yes, that was me. My style has been described as fresh, fun, and colorful, and I believe that captures what I try to do perfectly.
